The newest pianist to watch, and in many ways the most dynamic of all, is

Mekhla Kumar. Her on-stage presence is unassuming, but with Liszt,

Rachmaninov and Scriabin she is a force to be reckoned with: in big piano

literature she plays with abundant, forward-moving energy and an uncanny

absence of strain.

The most challenging piece in the program was unquestionably Beethoven’s Piano

Concert No. 4 in G Op. 58, with soloist Mekhla Kumar.

This magnificent work was played by soloist and orchestra alike with tremendous

dedication, the popular second movement Andante especially so.

As for Kumar, her star is on the ascendant.

The final of the three Rachmaninov pieces was the No 4 in E minor, marked Presto. It has been likened to Chopin’s

Revolutionary Etude, and her performance of it was spinetingling, leaving the capacity audience quite overwhelmed.
